A Day in Bellagio: Shopping, Style & Slow Luxury on Lake Como

Experience the effortless elegance of Bellagio through the lens of refined living – a glimpse into life beyond the villa walls.

Welcome to Bellagio, “The Pearl of the Lake”

Perched on the promontory that divides Lake Como’s southern arms, Bellagio is a jewel in Italy’s northern crown. Its cobbled streets, wisteria-lined terraces and artisan boutiques offer more than just scenic delight; they offer a preview of what life could look like for those seeking a property in Lake Como.

A Morning on the Water: The Art of the Arrival

Our day begins in Argegno, a quiet gem on the lake’s western shore, with an elegant start at Bar Motta, widely regarded as serving the finest coffee in town. From here, the ferry terminal is just steps away – no car required, just a cappuccino in hand and an appetite for the views ahead.

We board the lake ferry, settling into sun-drenched seats as the boat glides northward, pausing at Lezzeno, Sala Comacina, Lenno, and Tremezzo. It’s a journey of increasing wonder – elegant villas rising from the hillsides, bougainvillaea tumbling from balconies, children tracing their fingers across the wake.

By the time Bellagio appears, shimmering on its peninsula, the magic has already begun.

Coffee with a View, Culture in the Shadows

As Bellagio’s stone steps welcome us ashore, we skip the lakefront cafés in favour of a charming detour up one of the cobbled alleys leading to the Basilica di San Giacomo — a Romanesque treasure dating to the 12th century. Here, tucked beside the ancient stone façade, sits Caffè Bar Sport, housed in a former monastery and steeped in calm.

Some of us wander inside to admire the church’s solemn beauty. Others linger in the sun with macchiatos and views that feel painted rather than real.

Bellagiosetta: A Silk-Lover’s Dream

Just a few paces away lies Bellagioseta, a boutique that defines the phrase “hidden gem.” Known for its silk heritage (Como is the epicentre of Europe’s silk industry), the shop is a celebration of craftsmanship: silk ties, scarves, garments, handbags, and, on this occasion, a pair of exquisite hand-stitched shoes I couldn’t resist.

Friendly service, thoughtful curation, and elegant gift wrapping make it the perfect place to find something exceptional, either for yourself or as a sophisticated token for those who couldn’t join you.

Dining Beyond the Obvious

Lunch in Bellagio rewards the curious. Rather than choosing a lakefront table, we wander deeper into the heart of town, where trattorias tucked into narrow streets offer not only better value but often better food and service. A family-run pizzeria, a crisp glass of Lugana, and the scent of rosemary from a hidden terrace, these are the flavours of Bellagio that residents cherish long after the tourists depart.

The Artisan’s Touch: I Vetri Di Bellagio

Our post-lunch stroll leads us to I Vetri di Bellagio, a charming glassware boutique specialising in handblown ornaments since 1952. Inside, colour dances on glass shelves, and we discover the perfect wall clock – a vibrant centrepiece for our new apartment in Argegno. The prices, delightfully modest compared to London, belie the quality on offer.

Departing in Style: A Taste of the Lake Como Lifestyle

With only minutes to spare, we descend back toward the lakefront and…pause. There, gently bobbing at the water’s edge, are the private water taxis. Elegant, polished wooden vessels offering bespoke transfers across the lake.

As a parting indulgence, we charter one for a direct journey to Menaggio, where friends await with aperitivi. It’s an experience that defies cliché: hair tousled by the wind, champagne smiles, pulling up to a private jetty like a film still from La Dolce Vita. This, surely, is Lake Como living at its finest.

Bellagio offers a pace of life that is difficult to replicate elsewhere. Cobbled streets, artisan boutiques, and trattorias tucked into narrow alleys form the fabric of daily life here. For property owners, the village rewards those who look beyond the obvious: the residents' Bellagio, with its quiet terraces and family-run restaurants, is a world apart from the lakefront tourist trail.

Bellagio sits on the promontory that divides Lake Como's two southern arms, giving it one of the most commanding positions on the lake. For buyers, this means exceptional views in multiple directions, strong ferry connections to both shores, and access to the full length of the lake without relying on a car. It is one of the most connected villages on the water.

Argegno is one of the most practical and underrated bases on the lake's western shore. The ferry terminal sits within easy walking distance of the village centre, with regular services calling at Lezzeno, Sala Comacina, Lenno, Tremezzo, and Bellagio. For property owners who want to explore the lake without a car, it offers quiet village life with excellent connectivity.

Life on Lake Como moves on the water as much as on land. Morning coffees at harbourside bars, ferry journeys between villages, aperitivi with friends at a private jetty, and evenings on a terrace above the lake are the rhythms that owners come to cherish. It is a life shaped by the lake itself, and one that most buyers say they underestimated until they experienced it first-hand.
